Galactose lectin-9 (LGALS9) (Gene ID:3965) is a gene that encodes the protein Galactose lectin-9, a member of the Galectin family known for its specific binding ability. Galactose lectin-9 is involved in a variety of physiological processes, including immune regulation and inflammation. Galactose lectin-9 was initially identified as a protein that binds to beta-galactoside and is expressed in a variety of tissues, including the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. It has since been recognized for its immunomodulatory function and its role in regulating the immune response. Galactose lectin-9 plays a crucial role in immunomodulation and is involved in the regulation of both innate and adaptive immune responses. It selectively interacts with its receptor TIM-3 (T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin structural domain-containing protein 3), which is expressed predominantly on immune cells, including T-cells, NK-cells, and dendritic cells. The relationship between Galactose lectin-9 and interaction between Galactose lectin-9 and TIM-3 on T cells leads to inhibition of T cell responses. This interaction induces T cell apoptosis (cell death) and exhaustion, suppresses effector T cell activity, and contributes to immune tolerance. Galactose lectin-9 has anti-inflammatory properties; it inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and promotes the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, which helps to reduce excessive inflammation.
